Ostralos was formed in 2008 under the name "Specialist Dental Supplies (SDS)". The original aim of the company was to increase product access for dental practitioners working in specialised areas of practice. In the past, many practitioners had been personally importing products from overseas that were not available from existing New Zealand distributors. Unlicensed self-importation is now deemed an unacceptable practice by the medical device importing authorities in New Zealand. In response to these product access issues, Ostralos was born.

Ostralos seeks out products being used overseas that are not currently available in New Zealand. Many of the products are specialised and are of relatively low volumes. However, as it has grown Ostralos has sought to supply not only specialised products, but products which are frequently used in medical and dental practices and which contribute to ongoing costs. By seeking out manufacturers not currently supplying the New Zealand market, we have been able to bring in new products which provide a high quality cost-effective alternative to products that clinicians have previously been using. As a primarily web based company, Ostralos can control its overheads to make these smaller volume specialised products available, and larger volume products available at lower prices.

We know that in modern dental and medical practice a web based ordering system is highly efficient and accurate. Records of your purchases are clearly documented and past orders you have made with us are available for audit and accounting purposes. The credit card based payment system gives the advantage of the purchaser gaining loyalty credit card points.

Ostralos would welcome any suggestions of products that are not yet available in New Zealand, or products for which you would like to see more competitive prices. We are constantly working on expanding the range of products we have available and will make every effort to provide you with what you request.
